Ambassadors

We are pleased to introduce you to our Wales International ambassadors! We are recruiting some bright sparks from our #WorldwideWelsh family to bring you news from around the world, as it happens. We are so thankful to our ambassadors for joining us in our mission to connect the Welsh around the World.

Meet them below:

Liz Millman, nee Williams, is a traveller, splitting her time at present between Wales and Australia, staying with family in Melbourne. Liz’s Dad, John Williams, was born in Menai Bridge, learning English when he went to school.

He matriculated from Beaumaris Grammar School, but then had to find work in England to help support his widowed Mother. Although living in Worcestershire, Liz spent every holiday at Nain’s house in Menai Bridge and grew up to love her Welsh heritage. Retirement brought a range of challenges to Liz, but also many opportunities and her travelling life style started.

Liz is a member of the Rotary Club of Bangor Gwynedd, and also a member of Llanfairpwll Women’s Institute. Liz set up and still manages the social enterprise, Learning Links International, which is now based in Wales, and mainly explores the shared histories of Wales and countries around the world.

When in Australia Liz finds plenty to do. She attends Welsh Classes at the Welsh Church in Melbourne and is reviving links between Beaumaris in Victoria and Beaumaris on Anglesey and curates stories for the People’s Collection Wales in the new Migration project.

Liz’s other main link is with the island of Jamaica, where she has undertaken a range of project work in communities for over 20 years, most recently establishing the Jamaica Wales Alliance.

As a literacy and language specialist, Liz worked with the Ministry of Education and the Jamaican High Commission, as well as many Jamaican communities in the UK, exploring and eventually gaining accreditation for the Jamaican language. Most recently Liz has involved poets from Jamaica and Wales to celebrate their love of their heart languages through links based on their common background of Eisteddfod.  We thank Liz for joining us in our #WorldwideWelsh mission!

Aran Jones is co-founder of the hugely popular SaySomethinginWelsh.com Welsh language course which he started with together with Iestyn ap Dafydd over ten years ago.

Aran was was brought up in a range of different countries, including with Wales, England, Germany, Portugal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia without any Welsh but always considered himself Welsh at heart; although he couldn’t tell you exactly why this is! His mother, who is from just outside of Aberystwyth, spoke Welsh until the age of six but soon lost it after her family moved to England for work and had to make the decision to speak English at home after she got beaten one to many times as school.

Aran studied at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth but left university with no more Welsh than he’d started it and travelled abroad to work for the rest of his twenties. At the age of 32, Aran returned “home” and did a four week intensive Wlpan course in Aberystwyth at the end of which he could “sort-of” speak Welsh.  He eventually joined Cymuned, the communities and housing and language pressure group and says that, for the first time in his life, he finally felt a sense of place, a sense of belonging and a sense of personal identity.

He considers his work as a way to give something back to Welsh communities, and recently taught what is being called the world’s largest Welsh lesson on Radio Two with Jeremy Vine. You can also find some of Aran’s content on Kindle and Amazon. We are so pleased to welcome him to our Ambassador team!

You may have heard of Evrah Rose – this spoken word poet has been making big waves recently in Wales and beyond. If you haven’t though, we can guarantee you will soon! Her rousing poetry has been featured on BBC SESH and you can find her energetic, fierce spoken word performances making the rounds online and at a stage near you.

Hailing from Wrexham, Evrah is incredibly passionate about her hometown and driven to share the innovate things that are happening in the town. Evrah is a socially conscious injustice poet who delves into taboo subject matter without fear, using a mix of her own experiences and perspectives of others.

Starting writing poetry at just nine years old, Evrah is studying English Literature at Wrexham Glyndŵr University and is about to embark in a residency at Tŷ Pawb, a cultural community resource centre in Wrexha, .

The last twelve months has seen a stratospheric rise in her popularity, with commissioned work by the BBC for spoken word films that has been shared by BBC 2, 3, 4 and BBC Wales. Evrah has headlined various spoken word events around the North West and her music and poetry combinations have been aired by BBC Radio Wales as part of BBC Introducing.

We are delighted she is joining us as an ambassador.
